Local attractions in Marlow, Maidenhead and surrounding villages

We are conveniently situated for excellent sightseeing and shopping opportunities in our local towns. The River Thames and surrounding countryside offer spectacular walks.

Stroll along the footpath adjacent to the Thames in Maidenhead.

(Boulters Lock)

Arrive at Boulters Lock. A "bolter" was a miller and hence means "miller's lock." The first pound lock was constructed in order to make the higher reaches of the River Thames on the site in 1772, although there had been other types of lock, including a flash lock on the site previously. The lock itself was built just two years after the Thames Act which gave the Thames Navigation Commission the power of compulsory purchase in order to make the river more accessible.

Refreshments on Ray Mill island

Visit Ray Mill island and have light refreshments

Refreshments on Ray Mill island

Relax on the banks of the island in the Thames watching the ducks and swans frollicking on the grassy river banks. Swan Upping is an annual ceremonial in which mute swans on the River Thames are rounded up, caught, marked, and then released.

Visit the Sounding Arch

Maidenhead Railway Bridge (aka Maidenhead Viaduct) carries the main line of the Great Western Railway over the River Thames in Maidenhead. The bridge was designed by the Great Western's famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and it was completed in 1838. The railway is carried across the river on two brick arches, which at the time of building were the widest and flattest in the world. Each span is 128 feet (39 m), with a rise of only 24 feet (7 m).

Stanley Spencer Gallery Cookham

The Spencer Gallery opened in 1962, is unique as the only gallery in Britain devoted exclusively to an artist in the village where he was born and spent most of his working life. To Spencer, Cookham was the scene of heavenly visitations and its influence can be seen when touring the village.

Marlow Bridge

There has been a bridge on the site since the reign of King Edward III. The current bridge is a suspension bridge, designed by William Tierney Clark and built from 1829 to 1832, and was a prototype for the nearly identical but larger Széchenyi Chain Bridge across the River Danube in Budapest.

Cricket played on the village green

Relax and watch the local team on the village green - Perhaps enjoy a drink from the new cricket pavillion bar.
